I've been enjoying the Olympics so much this year, the ups, the downs, the drama, the personal stories of success and failure. Today, I want to share some idioms and uses about "ICE"(氷).

The 2018 Winter Olympics will begin on Friday, February 9th.  Are you excited?  I am!  This year, with the Olympics so close to Japan, it will be very easy to watch most of the events.  What events do you enjoy watching the most?  I like the figure skating, luge, bobsled and Nordic events.  However, my favorite Olympic events are always the opening and closing ceremonies.    Seeing the countries of the world come together is such a great symbol of peace . . .even if it is, only a symbol. Here are the events for this year's Olympics.

  • Alpine skiing (11)
  • Biathlon (11)
  • Bobsleigh (3)
  • Cross-country skiing (12)
  • Curling (3)
  • Figure skating (5)
  • Freestyle skiing (10)
  • Ice hockey (2)
  • Luge (4)
  • Nordic combined (3)
  • Short track speed skating (8)
  • Skeleton (2)
  • Ski jumping (4)
  • Snowboarding (10)
  • Speed skating (14)
And here are the medals.  How many will come back to Japan this year? And here are the mascots Soohorang, a white tiger, and Bandabi, a black bear. ( Bandabi is the mascot for the paralympics). Good luck to Japan, the USA, and all the athletes around the world who have worked so hard to be there. Citius -Altius - Fortius. Faster - Higher - Stronger. More on this next week. Torch relay theme song. “Let Everyone Shine”

Emotions Part 7: Reverence, Awe (畏敬) タイトルをクリックしてください

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

In this final part of my emotions series, I will talk about reverence, or awe.  In Japan, I think this emotion is usually missed at Christmastime.  Most Japanese Christmas parties, are a little wild with firecrackers, costumes, cake and champagne.  Chicken from Kentucky, and Christmas cake.   Most Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas, with a special church service, the singing of hymns, or attending a nativity play.  All experiences that fill you with an emotion of reverence. So here are a few English phrases about reverence and awe.
  1. The Christmas service filled me with a deep reverence.
  2. The first Sunrise of the year filled me with awe.
  3. I was awestruck when I held my grandson for the first time.
  4. You children must sit reverently until the church service has ended.
  5. We need a president with a greater sense of reverence for the constitution.
Today, I will stop at five phrases.  This ends my series on emotions.  I will take a brief New Year's break, and be back around the middle of January. I want to thank all of you for a wonderful year, and wish you all a Merry Christmas and an awesome new year. Here are a few final photos of my Christmas.

Emotions Part 6: Satisfaction (満足)タイトルをクリックしてください

Another emotion prevalent at Christmas(hopefully), is satisfaction (満足).  After waking up on Christmas morning, seeing Santa's presents, checking our the goodies in your Xmas stocking, and finally opening the mountain of presents from friends and relatives under the tree, the child is filled with satisfaction that only comes once a year at Christmas.   So, today, how to express satisfaction in English.

  1. Christmas has exceeded my expectations.
  2. That was delicious.  I couldn't eat another bite.
  3. I'm so full.
  4. I'm as satisfied as a fox in a henhouse.
  5. Some people are never satisfied, no matter how much they have.
  6. Customer satisfaction is the backbone of any business.
  7. I made banana bread last night, but I'm very unsatisfied with the results.
  8. It seems like nothing I do will ever satisfy you.
  9. I'm very unsatisfied with President Trump's job performance!
  10. Finally, my Mother's favorite poem about dissatisfaction:

Man Is A Fool

Anonymous

As a rule, man is a fool, When it's hot, he wants it cool; When it's cool, he wants it hot, Always wanting what is not.

Never wanting what he's got.

I had a very satisfying experience last Thursday.  A Christmas lunch with my wonderful students at Iyataka Culture School.  Thank you so much for a wonderful time.  I'm looking forward to seeing you all next year. Last night, I went to Akita Station to enjoy the Christmas lights.  My heart and soul were very satisfied!
